Daylight Savings: How to adjust your little one to the new time

Daylight Savings: How to adjust your little one to the new time

You might already be thinking about the clock change this coming weekend & might be wondering if an hour difference can actually impact your child's body clock. Short answer is, it can. I know an hour doesn’t seem much but it can definitely affect your bub’s body clock.

There are ways you can help transition your little one to the new time:

OPTION #1 You can start slowly adjusting them over 6 days prior to the time change.

To do this, you gradually get them up 10 minutes early each day.

*This approach is not necessary for toddlers - it just doesn’t work as well. Options 2 & 3 would work better.

See example below:

OPTION #2 Do nothing & move their schedule forward

If the time change is now less than 6 days away, take heart, you can just move their whole schedule forward.

 See example below:

OPTION #3 Adjust the morning of the time change

The morning of the time change, you wake your little one up in the new time. For example, your little one normally wakes at 7.00am, so the morning of the time change, you get them up at 7.00am (new time), which will feel like 6.00am. Then follow their usual wake windows or schedule.

If you need more support with your little one's sleep, I've got you covered! I have 1:1 Support options available to help you achieve your sleep goals for your child. This includes a comprehensive sleep analysis of your child based on a completion of a 3-4 days sleep log & detailed questionnaire. From this, I am able to tailor a sleep plan specifically for your child and their temperament, and ensure that the methods sit right with you as a parent and is well-suited to your family. This also includes a 1 week or 2 week support, where I can hold your hand through implementing the plan via phone calls and Whatsapp text messaging. If you would like to tackle your child's sleep on your own and at your own pace but just need the tools, my Sleep Guides are just what you need. I'll teach you all you need to know to achieve great sleep at night, during the day, and through every sleep challenge until your little one turns 4.
